How Amina Found Hope in the Midst of Struggle

Meet Amina, a brave young woman from the Sudanese refugee community in Egypt. Her journey is one of resilience, faith, and the incredible impact of having someone there when times get tough. Amina's story shows us the incredible strength that lies within us, waiting to be discovered, even in the face of hardship.

The Tough Moments

Picture this: It's 2019, and Amina just got married. But happiness takes a backseat when a family argument leads to her husband landing in jail. With a baby on the way, Amina finds herself grappling with emotions and questioning why life took such a sharp turn.

As the years pass, Amina faces disappointment and trauma. The long wait for her husband's release tests her patience, and thoughts of divorce start creeping in. It's a tough situation, and Amina can't help but wonder if there's anyone or anything looking out for her and her family.

Extending a helping hand

Amidst the challenges Amina faced, a caring soul stepped into the picture—one of those THRC-trained lay counselor Sudanese pastors. He shared, 'I met Amina in our church, and after hearing her story, I applied what I learned in psychological first aid. Being trained by THRC Egypt, I understood how crucial both physical health first aid and psychological first aid are. So, I counseled with Madam Amina, spent time encouraging her, and we prayed together, truly believing that things would get better.'

This person becomes Amina's confidante, providing a safe space for her to pour out her fears and frustrations. Together, they share moments of prayer and encouragement, slowly rebuilding Amina's hope and strength.

Something Amazing Happened

Amina felt a shift within herself—a renewed strength and determination. The pastor added, 'After three months of standing up, Madam Amina called me asking for a meeting, and we met again. She told the pastor, “Thank you for being there to listen to my problems. I really love my husband, and I pray for him to be out of prison.”

Also, a visit to the prison brings unexpected good news: her husband is set to be released in the first week of 2024. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Amina shares her testimony at church, celebrating the triumph of faith over despair.

Amina's story reminds us of the power of a helping hand in tough times. With the right support and a listening ear, individuals like Amina can navigate away from the threshold of despair. Ongoing trauma healing training initiatives can empower more community members to be there for each other, offering a lifeline to those going through tough times.
